Laws of the Silver Marches

LAWS OF THE SILVER MARCHES

The Silver Marches is a land of laws and religions, its jurisprudence set by the guidance of the League of Silver March and its High Council. The heavily influenced teachings of the holy clergy of the cities are flavored by the majestic wisdom of the denizens of Nature. However, not even the considerable might and reach of the powers, can tame the underlying wildness of its lands or people. Still, it is because of those that stand for sound governance and effective laws that the people of the Silver Marches may sleep sound at night in their homes.

As with all places, enforcement of the law is more often than highly dependent upon expediency, practical relevance, and convenience. For instance, petty thugs roaming in the backstreets may receive limited spotlight from law enforcement, but murderous bandits in the heart of a marketplace would likely be dealt with swiftly. The merciful and ever present justice of the Silver Marches is diametrically opposed by the desperate, but no less efficient harshly dealt justice of the war plagued port city of Nesme. In this city, unwelcome to the League, but still quietly assisted by Alustriel one may expect the enforcers of law to take on the combined role of judge and executioner if the need arises. However, desperation creates strange bedfellows and as such, many may find themselves welcome in Nesme that are not welcome in the Silver Marches. After all if the council is not concerned with Nesme's state of war, then where is the responsibility to respect Silver Marches state of their criminals or even more undesired company such as the Red Wizards of Thay.

Due to the youth of this league, this is an age where legal loopholes are a privilege for the powerful to include exceptional clauses as tools of the resourceful. Silverymoon deals with internal unrest with little tolerance, by means of severe consequences. Eloquent lawyers will not save common lawbreakers, nor will petty bribes shake the dedication of the judiciary. Let them be warned who dance on the precipice of breaching the law, for the eye of Helm watches, and the punishment of Tyr just.

The High Council, consisting of leaders from throughout the lands having come together to rule fairly and just, however, even as dedicated as they may be, they cannot meet all the needs of the lands. For the crimes and concerns of lesser magnitude than the risk of the entire Silver Marches, the High Council has appointed the lower council to provide assistance and leadership.

State Laws

State Laws apply to all of the cities within the Silver Marches, both in Silverymoon and the lesser towns. While not officially part of the Silver Marches, the city of Nesme also follows similar laws, but do not concern themselves with crimes taken place within the Confederacy. Due to the state of war, Nesme has instituted martial law. While it moves with more speed it does not always rule in a equal or fair manner. Many nobles and powerful members have found that greasing the right palms is the easiest way to speed the justice system in their favor.
